How to cram for an exam without wrecking your recall

Cramming gets a bad name because most people cram badly — they re-read notes until 2am and mistake exhaustion for preparation. Done right, a compressed study session can carry you a surprising distance. The trick is to spend every minute retrieving, not reviewing.

The one rule: produce, don't recognise

Under time pressure the instinct is to re-read everything once more. Resist it. Recognising material on the page is not the skill the exam tests — producing it from memory is. This is the whole finding behind active recall vs re-reading: testing yourself once beats re-reading four times. When you're short on hours, that multiplier is the only thing that matters.

The one-night plan

  1. Triage first (15 min). Find the 20% of topics worth 80% of the marks — past papers, the syllabus weighting, whatever the professor repeated. Cram that, ignore the rest.
  2. Read once, fast (45 min). One pass over the high-value material to build a rough map. Don't highlight. Don't re-read.
  3. Quiz yourself for the rest of the night. Generate practice questions and flashcards from the material and cycle them, hammering the ones you miss. The discomfort of failing to retrieve is exactly where the learning happens.
  4. Sleep. Even four hours beats an all-nighter — memory consolidation happens during sleep, and a fried brain can't retrieve what it crammed.

If you have a weekend instead of a night

Same shape, more cycles. Turn each chapter into a study pack on Friday, then spend Saturday and Sunday on repeated quiz passes, spacing your reviews a few hours apart rather than back-to-back. The one caution: if the material is AI-generated, make sure it's traceable to your source, or you risk drilling a fabricated answer into permanent memory.
